Byetta is a prescription medication that is given by injection using a pre-filled dosing pen. Used in conjunction with certain other diabetic medications such as Metformin, Byetta is meant to improve blood sugar control when used with an exercise and diet program. If you are prescribed Byetta, you should discuss all of the potential side effects with your doctor. Nausea is one of the most common side effects that you may experience as a result of taking the medication. If you experience nausea while taking Byetta, you will want to know learn how to treat it as quickly as possible.

      Change the timing of your injections, so you are eating within minutes of taking Byetta. When taking Byetta, you must eat within one hour after taking the medication; however, waiting 30 minutes or longer into the hour may increase your likelihood of a nauseous reaction.

      Cut foods that are fried or high in fat out of your diet. Decrease or eliminate the amount of spicy foods that you eat in order to decrease the amount of nausea that you experience when taking Byetta. Take note of which types of foods make you nauseous after taking the medication and which foods do not. Eliminate the foods that make your nauseous and slowly work them back into your diet once you no longer experience nausea as a side-effect.

      Decrease the amount of food that you eat. When taking Byetta, you will feel fuller faster than you did prior to taking the medication. Eat smaller amounts until you are able to determine how much you can tolerate before feeling sick to the stomach.

      Consume ginger ale to ease your stomach. According to the Byetta Starter Kit Brochure, ginger may help to alleviate nausea caused by the medication. In addition to ginger ale, ginger tea and other foods containing ginger also may prove helpful.

      Rise slowly after eating. Take your time and allow your food to settle. Do not lie down after a meal, as this may worsen the symptoms.

      Speak with your doctor if the nausea persists or worsens. In many cases, any signs of nausea will decrease the longer you take the medication. If this is not the case for you, talk with your doctor to determine if decreasing the dose until you have acclimated to the medication will help reduce the symptoms.
