How to Use Strips for a One Touch Glucometer

When you test your blood glucose with a OneTouch meter, proper use of the test strips is essential to getting accurate blood glucose readings. High blood sugar can cause many long-term health effects if not properly managed, and low blood sugar can cause a faint, flushed feeling and shakes. Use your OneTouch meter regularly and properly to ensure the most effective blood glucose control.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Dry your hands with a clean towel.

    • 2

Read the expiration date on the OneTouch test strip container to be sure your strips have not expired. Open the container and remove one strip. Close the container to prevent any contamination of the remaining strips.

    • 3

Insert the strip into your One Touch meter with the collection end facing out. Watch the meter display to confirm that the coding number presented on the display matches the coding on the test strip container. If the meter displays an error, remove the strip, throw it away and repeat the process with a new strip. If the coding number on the container does not match the number displayed on the meter, press the “C” button on your meter repeatedly until the proper code appears.

    • 4

Clean a test area with an alcohol wipe. Use your lancing device to puncture the test area. Apply a small drop of blood to the collection area of the One Touch strip. Wait for your meter to display the blood glucose result.

    • 5

Dispose of used strips in proper biohazard containers.
