How to Dispose of Old Glucometers

A glucometer, also known as a blood glucose meter, monitors the blood sugar levels of diabetics. Using only a single drop of blood, a glucometer can measure the amount of glucose that is present in a diabetic's bloodstream. Depending upon the model, the results can be available in as little as five seconds. A glucometer consists of a lancet device, individual lancets, a meter and meter strips. Lancets are small needles that prick the skin, causing it to bleed. A meter strip is then placed into the meter, which draws the blood in so that the meter can measure the amount of glucose. Because they are used to handle an individual's blood, how they are disposed of is important. Lancets can spread communicable diseases and therefore must be disposed of in a sanitary manner.
