Ketoacidosis Symptoms
Ketoacidosis results when the body is unable to produce enough insulin. To continue functioning, the body goes into starvation mode and burns fats for energy. The fats convert to ketones, which are produced much more quickly than the body can use them. When this happens, the sugar from the burning ketones causes dangerously high blood-sugar levels. Ketoacidosis is a concern for people with type 1 diabetes. It can take hours to fully develop and can be fatal.-
Dehydration
-
Dehydration, frequent urination, dry mouth or excessive thirst occurs because the ketones draw water from the tissues of the body as they burn. As they absorb water and are processed through the kidneys and bladder, the ketones show up in the urine as well as the blood.
Nausea
-
Nausea is an uncomfortable, queasy feeling that may be accompanied by hot flashes, sweating or vomiting. Vomiting is also a symptom of ketoacidosis.
Breath Odor
-
Your body's chemical reaction to ketoacidosis can cause your breath to have a sweet, fruity odor.
Tachycardia
-
Ketoacidosis can be preceded by a rapid pulse or rapid heartbeat called tachycardia.
Abdominal Pain
-
Abdominal pain is characterized by cramps, sharp, dull or aching pain in the abdominal area. As a symptom of ketoacidosis, abdominal pain is more common in children than adults.
Mental Difficulties
-
Confusion, forgetfulness, difficulty in concentrating and disorientation can result when blood sugars are unstable.
Coma
-
A coma is described as a persistent vegetative state and is the most severe symptom of ketoacidosis.
