Flax Oil & Diabetes

Flax oil is one of many supplements that can be purchased over the counter. It's a great supplement for diabetics as well as for healthy adults.
  1. Definition

    • Flax oil, also called flaxseed oil or linseed oil, is extracted from seeds of the flax plant. It is characteristically yellow and can be purchased in capsule form or as the oil itself, which can be consumed as is (such as atop salads or as a bread dipping).

    Oil vs. Seed

    • Flaxseeds contain lignans, antioxidants that have anti-cancer properties and have been shown to possibly benefit heart health. Oil extracted from flaxseeds lose the lignans, but still contain Omega-3 fatty acids.

    Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • Flax oil contains high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for arthritis, brain and cardiovascular health and the immune system.

    Diabetics

    • Omega-3 fatty acids in flax oil help increase insulin sensitivity, increased HDL cholesterol and decreased LDL oxidation. Flax oil, therefore, is a highly beneficial product for diabetics.

    Storage

    • When purchasing flax oil, there are two options: capsules and the oil itself. Look for the expiration date on the bottle for the capsules. Oil has a short shelf life and must be kept in the refrigerator, but is only good for six weeks. If it smells rancid, discard it.
