Alternatives to Elastic Stockings

Elastic stockings are prescribed by physicians to patients needing constant compression on the lower extremities. They can significantly reduce dangerous swelling caused by a number of medical conditions, including diabetes and chronic hypertension. Elastic stockings are not designed to provide sufficient compression for every variation in leg shape. Though they are highly durably, some patients find them difficult to wear, uncomfortable and complain that sweat and dirt is trapped by the fabric.
  1. Endovenous Laser Treatment

    • Some patients who are prescribed elastic stockings for non-fatal medical conditions may qualify for endovenous laser treatment. This relatively new treatment has shown efficacy in treating some cases of severe varicose veins that have required compression from elastic stockings. The treatment and recovery are brief and may eliminate the need to wear elastic stockings permanently. Check with your physician to see if you may be a good candidate for permanent treatment with a laser. Not all insurance providers cover laser treatments.

    Semirigid Compression Options

    • Active patients suffering the effects of chronic swelling, or edema, may be better qualified for treatment via semirigid compression garments than by traditional elastic stockings. For some individuals who are able to maintain an active lifestyle despite chronic edema, elastic stockings may not be effective due to less compression than provided by other compression garments. These garments are easier to remove and put on than traditional compression stockings. Ask your physician if other compression garments may be a viable treatment option.

    Pneumatic Compression Devices

    • Pneumatic, or inflatable, compression devices can offer a more specialized form of compression for severe medical conditions. Unlike elastic stockings, inflatable compression devices are easy to remove and you can wear them constantly or intermittently in accordance with prescribed treatment. Physicians can adjust the tightness, location and frequency of the pressure to provide the best possible treatment of symptoms. Pneumatic compression devices are particularly effective in treating localized or severe edema in non-mobile patients.

    Lifestyle Treatments

    • Sufferers of mild edema may qualify to treat their condition through good lifestyle choices and medication options. Light to moderate exercise, low sodium intake and maintaining healthy blood sugar levels can all combat mild edema. Elevating the lower extremities and maintaining a cool temperature in the home can also aid in treating mild causes of swelling. Medications, including diuretics, can also aid in preventing edema. Talk to your physician if you feel your edema may be sufficiently mild to treat with ongoing lifestyle choices and medication.
