Sure-T Infusion Set Instructions

Insulin infusion therapy is a method of continuous subcutaneous insulin delivery used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. The pump tests the levels of glucose in the blood stream and delivers a set amount of insulin through an attached needle or catheter. The Sure-T infusion set is a manual insertion infusion set that has a fine 29 gauge needle attached. It also contains two adhesive pads for increased needle security. Medtronic, the manufacturer of the infusion set, recommends that the infusion set be changed every three days to prevent infection.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling the infusion set or pump.

    • 2

Prepare the insulin and pump as recommended by your health care provider. Lay the infusion set packaging and cleansing supplies within easy reach.

    • 3

Remove the Sure-T infusion set from the packaging. There will be two tubing sets within the packaging. One set will be shorter and have two pads attached: The needle will be attached to one pad, and the glucose monitoring pad will be within the other pad.The longer tubing set will have the insulin reservoir on one end and capped connector on the other end.

    • 4

Insert the reservoir into the insulin pump as instructed by the pump manufacturer.

    • 5

Squeeze the wings of the connector located at the end of the longer tubing and remove the cap. Slide the connector into the glucose monitoring pad until you hear a "click" confirming the tubing is connected properly.

    • 6

Inspect the entire length of tubing looking for cracks or breaks. Check the needle making sure it is straight and placed at a 90-degree angle. Turn on the infusion pump allowing a few drops to flow from the end of the needle: This is also referred to as priming the line, because the air is removed from the tubing. Discard the infusion set if there are any defects.

    • 7

Select an appropriate site for insertion of the needle. The site should located in a fatty area away from any bony prominences. Ideal areas are the abdomen, thighs and upper arms. The selected site should be free of bumps, bruises, scar tissue and tattoos. If there is already an infusion set in place the replacement set should be placed at least two inches from the previous site. Avoid placing the infusion set within two inches of the belly button.

    • 8

Cleanse the selected site and surrounding area with an alcohol wipe or a mild soap and water. The glucose monitoring pad will be placed two inches from the insertion site Allow the area to air dry before beginning the insertion of the needle.

    • 9

Squeeze the wings of the needle insertion pad. Turn the pad over so that the needle is pointing upward. Remove the adhesive backing from the pad surrounding the needle. Remove the protective covering from the needle.

    • 10

Pinch the selected insertion site between two fingers. Site changes such as skin hardening and bumps can occur following long term insulin use. If the site is not able to be pinched, another site must be selected.

    • 11

Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle so that the connected pad lies flat against the skin. Release the wings of the pad, and press down on the pad in a circular motion to ensure the pad is secured snugly.

    • 12

Remove the adhesive backing of the glucose monitoring pad and place the pad approximately two inches from the needle insertion site.
