Directions for a SureStep Meter

LifeScan manufactures glucometers to monitor your blood glucose levels for adjusting your insulin intake. The OneTouch SureStep meter is larger than most and incorporates bigger buttons with a large screen and large test strips that are easy to see and handle. Many diabetics have vision-related problems. This blood glucose monitoring system makes it easier for vision-impaired people to test their glucose level.

  1. Meter Coding

    • 1

Press the blue power button on the front of the meter to turn the device on. The display screen will turn on.

    • 2

Press the green "C" button to check the code in the meter. The meter will display the code number.

    • 3

Compare the meter code number to the code number on your test strip bottle. If the number is different, press the green button to advance it until the numbers match.

    Testing

    • 4

Wash and dry your hands. Check the test strip expiration date and the discard date. The discard date is four months after you open the bottle. Mark the date on each bottle with a pen when you open it.

    • 5

Pull a test strip out of the bottle and compare the dot color with the dot color on the bottle. If the test strip dot is darker than the dot on the bottle, do not use it.

    • 6

Pull the cap off a lancing device. Insert a lancet into the tip and press it down firmly. Twist the protective cover on the lancet counterclockwise and pull it off. Replace the cap on the lancing device and press the body down to cock it.

    • 7

Press the blue power button on the meter. Your last test results will show, or it will display lines if this is your first test with the meter.

    • 8

Hold the lancing device on the side of a finger and press the button to pierce your finger. Hold a test strip up to your finger and place one drop of blood on the pink test square. Turn the test strip over and check the confirmation dot. It will be completely blue.

    • 9

Insert the tapered end of the test strip into the right side of the meter and press it in as far as it will go. The pink test square should be facing up while you insert it.

    • 10

Wait about 30 seconds. The meter will display your glucose reading, along with the date and time.
