Metformin Vs. Insulin for the Treatment of Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes occurs when a woman experiences elevated blood glucose level during pregnancy, although she has not been previously diagnosed with diabetes. Physicians are now looking at metformin as a viable option over traditional methods for treating pregnancy diabetes.-
Traditional Treatment
-
Traditionally, women suffering from gestational diabetes control the condition with diet or insulin injections.
Metformin
-
Metformin is a oral medication used to reduce blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
Insulin
-
Insulin is a hormone used to reduce blood glucose levels in people with both types 1 and 2 diabetes.
Research Studies
-
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, the use of oral metformin pills is not associated with as many pregnancy complications as insulin injections. In addition, it is reported that pregnant women prefer the oral medication. The Review of Diabetic Studies reports that the incidences of neonates with low blood sugars are higher in mothers on insulin therapies
Considerations
-
There is limited research study data on using metformin for the treatment of gestational diabetes. Additional research studies are required to substantiate initial findings.
