What Is the Difference Between Humalog & Novalog Insulin?

Both Humalog and Novolog are forms of insulin used by diabetics to control the blood glucose levels in their circulatory system. The American Diabetes Association says that the factors that differentiate one type of insulin from another include how quickly they begin working in the bloodstream, when they peak, and how long they last.

Brands

• Humalog is produced by Eli Lilly and Company. Novolog is made by Novo Nordisk.

Formulation

• Both Humalog and Novolog are rapid-acting insulins, or boluses, that are commonly used by diabetics to curb spikes in blood glucose levels at mealtimes. Humalog starts working in approximately 15 minutes, while Novolog starts to work in 5 to 10 minutes.

Strength

• Novolog appears to be stronger than Humalog, especially for insulin pump users. Patients must cut back on dosages when switching from Humalog to Novolog to prevent hypoglycemic episodes.

Peak

• Novolog reaches peak activity at 52 minutes after injection, compared to 75 minutes for Humalog.

Longevity

• In July 2009, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a labeling change for Novolog that allowed insulin pump users to store it in their pump reservoirs for up to 6 days. The FDA stated in their press release that this change made Novolog the first and only rapid-acting insulin that has such a lengthy in-use time.
