Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then dry them with a clean towel or paper towels.

2
Insert a new lancet into your lancing device. It is important to use a new lancet every time you test to reduce the risk of infection as well as to ease the pain of testing.
-
3
Remove a new glucose test strip from its packaging and insert the strip into your meter. You want to be sure to insert it with the blood collection end facing out. Watch your meter's display screen for a blood collection prompt to be sure it recognizes the strip properly.
-
4
Select the site you wish to use to test your blood sugar and swab the area thoroughly with a clean, fresh alcohol wipe. The alcohol wipe will help reduce the risk of infection and prevent a contaminated reading due to foreign substances on your hands.
-
5
Lance the site and a drop of blood should form over the testing site. If necessary, you may need to massage or apply pressure to the area to obtain the blood sample.
-
6
Place the testing strip against the blood sample and allow the strip to absorb it.
-
7
Watch your meter's display to be sure that it is testing. Your blood glucose result should be displayed on the screen within about 5 seconds. If you keep a testing log, note your reading in the log.
