Diabetic Wound Remedies

Diabetes comes with many side effects and complications, including an inability for wounds to heal quickly. Diabetics are more likely to bruise and wound easily due to a compromised immune system and poor circulation. There are, however, many home remedies that can be used for diabetic wound therapy.
  1. Honey and Onion

    • If you have been wounded and the skin has been broken, stop the bleeding as soon as possible. Stop bleeding by sprinkling sugar or rubbing ice on the wound. Turmeric powder will stop bleeding instantly and can help prevent infection. It is also important to keep all cuts and wounds clean. If a cut or wound occurs, clean it thoroughly with warm water for two to three minutes. After thoroughly cleaning the wound, apply honey and a bandage. Honey is a natural antiseptic. It kills bacteria from cuts and wounds and will keep them from drying out.

Try adding pureed onion, which contains allicin, an anti-microbial agent, to the honey. Remove honey and onion mixture after one hour. Dressing can be repeated up to three times a day.

    Bananas Leaves and Garlic

    • Ripe banana leaves help if the wound has discharge or pus. Tie the ripe banana leaves securely around the wound to reduce discharge. Garlic also contains the anti-microbial allicin. This speeds up the healing process and stops bacteria from setting in. Grind garlic cloves into a paste and apply directly to the wound. Leave paste on the wound for 15 minutes only, as garlic is very strong and can burn if left on the skin too long.

    Vinegar and Foot Ulcers

    • Even small wounds and cuts heal slowly in diabetics. Vinegar may come handy for cuts of this nature if a slight stinging can be tolerated. Combine one tablespoon of vinegar to 300 milliliters of water. Place the mixture on the wound. If there is any amount of swelling put ice on your wound as well. If the wound is deeper, try elevating the area to help with any possible swelling.

Foot ulcers often occur in diabetics from wearing shoes that are too tight, not wearing the proper footgear, or from a puncture to the foot. Indian mulberry is a remedy for diabetic ulcers. Indian mulberry is a shrub tree grown in South Asia. Juice extracted from this fruit plant can resolve diabetic ulcers. Drink two tablespoons of extracted juice from the Indian mulberry plant three times a day for one month. Always consult a doctor if you are unsure about any herbal supplements, and particularly if the wound is refusing to heal.
