Is Type 2 Diabetes a Gene Mutation?
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes with more than 15 million people diagnosed in the United States alone. While type 2 diabetes is inherited, environmental factors trigger its onset.-
Identification
-
According to the American Diabetes Association, type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cells ignore the insulin, which the body needs to use glucose for energy. Researchers have identified a number of genes that contribute to a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Demographics with Increased Risk
-
While type 2 diabetes has a genetic connection, people of African, Native American, Hispanic and Pacific Island descent are at greater risk. In addition, women who had gestational diabetes during pregnancy have an increased risk.
Environmental Causes
-
Certain environmental factors trigger the onset of type 2 diabetes including a diet consisting of too much fat, too little carbohydrates and fiber, inadequate exercise or obesity.
Treatment
-
Each person requires a unique treatment plan from their doctor that may include using a blood glucose meter, medication and making healthy lifestyle choices.
Warning
-
If you have a family history of diabetes, discuss your risks of developing type 2 diabetes based on your lifestyle with your doctor.
