How to Change an Insulin Pump Site
For diabetics who depend on insulin pump therapy as a means of controlling blood sugar levels, it is essential to know how to change the insulin pump site. Most endocrinologists recommend changing the site every two to three days, to minimize the chance of infection. Although diabetes is a complex disease, changing the pump site is rather simple. By following the steps outlined below, you will be able to change your insulin pump site quickly and easily.Things You'll Need
- Insulin pump
- Insulin
- Reservoir
- IV prep/alcohol swab
- Infusion set
- Inserting device
Instructions
-
Removing the Current Site
-
1
Pinch the half-circle where your tubing meets the reservoir and turn it counterclockwise until the reservoir is completely removed from the inside of the pump.
-
2
Throw away the old tubing and reservoir, as they are designed for a one-time use only. Peel off the old site and discard that, as well.
-
3
Rewind your pump. There are five manufacturers of insulin pumps, each operating with its own guide. However, all have the same general principle when it comes to rewinding the pump. Follow your pump guide to the prime command using a combination of scrolling with the arrow keys and pressing "OK/ACT" button on your pump. Locate the prime command, then choose rewind. Listen for the motor in your pump to ensure you've done everything correctly and your pump is rewinding.
Starting a New Site
-
4
Draw up a full reservoir of insulin. Pull off the top of the reservoir (the one with the needle in it) and discard it. Twist the reservoir plunger counterclockwise to remove it. Discard the plunger. Connect the quick set to the reservoir by placing the end of the reservoir in the end of the quick set. Press down and turn clockwise until the two parts are connected.
-
5
Insert the full reservoir into the pump and turn clockwise until it is firmly in place. Prime the tubing. Stop priming once insulin has made its way through the tubing and is at the tip of the needle.
-
6
Cleanse the desired site with an alcohol swab or an IV prep pad. Allow the area to dry prior to inserting the needle. Place the needle portion of the quick set, needle-side up, into the quick set inserter. Peel off the backing, exposing the sticky side around the needle. Pull the inserter down until it clicks.
-
7
Place the loaded inserter with the needle against the skin of the desired site. Simultaneously press the two buttons on the sides, discharging the needle and cannula into your body. Pull the inserter away from the new site, leaving the cannula inside your body and ready to be used.
