Metformin Description

Metformin, also known as Glucophage, is used in conjunction with the treatment of type-2 diabetes. Prescribed in a tablet form, dosage of metformin may vary due to each individual case.

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, metformin can promote weight loss; therefore it may be a viable alternative to insulin for those who are nervous about weight gain due to diabetes treatment.

    Side Effects

    • Standard side effects of metformin can include a metallic taste in the mouth, upset stomach, diarrhea, or nausea. Severe cases of these side effects should be reported to a doctor immediately.

    Warnings

    • In rare instances, metformin use can lead to a build-up of lactic acid in the body, known as lactic acidosis. Severe stomach reactions from metformin should be investigated by a doctor.
