What Is Mean Blood Glucose?

The mean, or average blood glucose level, can vary depending on the individual, laboratory, or glucometer. Generally, a test that is 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or below is within normal limits.

    • A blood glucose test is administered to determine the amount of glucose (blood sugar) is in the body. Most tests are performed to determine if the patient is exhibiting symptoms of diabetes.

    Defined

    • Glucose is a byproduct of carbohydrates and is used by the body for energy. When the carbohydrates are consumed, glucose levels increase. This signals the pancreas to release insulin to stabilize the blood glucose levels.

    Benefits

    • Monitoring blood glucose is important in managing diabetes. If the levels fall either below or above the mean level, the risk of developing serious medical conditions increases.

    Types

    • When testing for blood glucose, there are various types of testing available. The individual can undergo a fasting test (no eating or drinking a minimum of six hours prior to testing), a urine test or a test using a glucose drink.

    Results

    • Results are variable, but in general a result over 100 mg/dL signifies hyperglycemia and below 100 mg/dL is hypoglycemia. If the blood glucose is low, a snack and/or drink containing sugar may be required to bring levels back to normal.
