How to Use an Auto Lancet

The auto-Lancet is a lancing device diabetics use to collect blood samples for glucose testing and monitoring. It is available in a standard size and a mini-size. Auot-Lancets are manufactured and sold under many different brand names. Not much different in size than a pen, the auto Lancet weighs only a half-ounce.

  1. How to Use an Auto Lancet

      Unscrew the top of the auto Lancet that covers where the lancet will be placed. This part is spring-loaded so when placing the lancet into position, grasp the lancet holder firmly to keep it from moving. Take the safety tip off the lancet and place the cover back over the lancet holder and screw it into place.

      Set the auto Lancet by holding onto the top and the bottom. Pull it apart until you hear a click, which means the device is set. The trigger will raise up from the unit.

      Put alcohol on a cotton ball and swab the end of your finger with it. Position the end of the auto Lancet over the tip of your finger and release the trigger.

      Place the end of your finger on the test strip and let it pick up the blood. Put the test strip in the glucose meter and wait for the number indicating your glucose level. If you do not get enough blood for testing the first time, you can set the lancet again for another try.

      After testing the blood, remove the top again. Place your fingernail on the lancet holder and pull the lancet out gently. Replace the top. Your auto Lancet is safe and secure until the next time it is needed.
