Holistic Treatment for Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes generally is contracted by adults over the age of 40. Poor health and nutrition are often attributed to the causes. Adults that contract type 2 diabetes are often overweight to obese taking little or no exercise in their daily routine. There are several conventional and holistic therapies to help control type 2 diabetes.
  1. Bitter Melon

    • Bitter melon is a medicinal herb common in parts of Central and South America. It is composed of several anti-diabetic compounds as well as insulin-like polypeptides which can lower the levels of blood sugar.

    Fenugeek

    • Fenugeek is a very common diabetic treatment option in India. The seed of fenugreek contains niconic acid and coumarin. In 1996 Nutrition Research trialed Fenugeek for six months on 60 patients with type 2 diabetes. 25 grams of powdered Fenugeek was given twice per day. The results showed an average reduction of the fasting blood sugar level from 151mg/dl to 112mg/dl.

    Gurmar

    • Gurmar is a plant native to India and is also known as the sugar eater. According to singleherbs.org, studies conducted by the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Madras, India found patients given gurmar with their hypoglycemic drugs were able to eventually reduce their medicines and lower their blood sugar.

    Onion and Garlic

    • Both raw onions and raw garlic contain volatile oils that can help lower glucose levels, according to a February 2002 clinical report entitled," Alternative therapies for type 2 diabetes" in the Alternative Medicine Review. Trials with animals showed the fasting glucose blood levels were significantly reduced when using onion and garlic.

    European Bluberries

    • The European blueberry was used to treat diabetes before insulin became available. It can reduce blood sugar levels as well as help reduce retinopathy, according to the 2002 Alternative Medicine Review report.
