How to Determine A1c

The A1c test is the best way that a diabetic can gauge the success of a treatment. It is a measure of the glycated hemoglobin, one that gives a view of how well the glucose levels have been controlled over a two to three month time period. The results determine whether a change is needed in your diabetes treatment or whether the current program is sufficient. Determining A1c levels can be done a few different ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your glucose levels with the glucose meter and record them for at least a one month's time. Keep record of them in a spreadsheet. Keep daily records in order for the calculations to work. Add up all of the level numbers and then divide them by 30 (31 if the month requires it).

    • 2

Enter the average glucose number into an A1c calculator.

    • 3

Find a more accurate number by taking an A1c home test or using an A1c meter. Although the A1c meter is more versatile, the A1c home test can give you accurate A1c reading for the past two to three months.

Go see your doctor. The most accurate test available is a laboratory test done at your doctor's office.
