Metformin Hydrochloride Information
Metformin is a prescription medication for treatment of type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes. According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 8 percent of Americans suffer from diabetes.-
Dosing

Immediate release tablets are available that contain 500 mg, 850 mg or 1,000 mg of metformin. Extended release tablets are available that contain 500 mg or 750 mg of metformin.
Contraindications

The National Institutes of Health states that metformin is not advised with diabetics that have a history of kidney, liver or heart disease. Alcohol should not be consumed while taking metformin, since it can lower blood sugar and increase the risk of side effects.
Interactions

Metformin may interact with many types of medications, including diuretics, steroids, thyroid medications, anticonvulsants, birth control pills, aspirin, beta blockers, MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) and others, according to the National Institutes of Health. Discuss all current medications with your physician prior to taking metformin.
Side Effects

Serious side effects include shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain, fever, chills and other flu-like symptoms. Less serious side effects include headache, muscle pain, muscle weakness, nausea, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disturbances.
Treatment

Metformin is only part of the recommended treatment plan for type 2 diabetes. Dietary changes and exercise are also recommended for improving management of diabetes.
