Vinegar & Diabetes Information

Vinegar is used in a number of applications and home treatments. There is some evidence that some types of vinegar can stabilize blood fasting glucose levels in diabetic individuals.
  1. Types

    • Apple cider vinegar is the most commonly used variety in diabetic treatments. The theory behind apple cider vinegar is that the antioxidants from the apples have not been removed, as white vinegar goes through a distillation process that removes sediment and nutrients.

    Use

    • Vinegar can burn the throat if ingested alone. Most diabetic applications call for 2 to 3 tbsp. diluted with 16 oz. of water, taken at bedtime. Blood sugar levels are lower in the mornings for most diabetics, but vinegar has been used to further moderate concentrations.

    Results

    • A study published in "Diabetic Care" indicate that glucose levels obtained upon waking were slightly lower than those of the control group.

    Effectiveness

    • While results were lower than those obtained through use of prescription medication, they were significant. More research needs to be done to ensure that vinegar is an acceptable treatment for blood sugar levels.

    Indications

    • Diabetic individuals should check with their doctor before starting any regimen, including vinegar. People with esophageal problems or ulcers should not use vinegar.
