Normal Blood Sugar Level for a Non-Diabetic Patient

Blood sugar is measured either at a laboratory or home. Blood sugar measurements are an important tool for maintaining normal blood sugar level ranges generally less than 100 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter).
  1. Home Blood Glucose Monitoring

    • Using a glucometer (blood sugar testing machine), an individual can take a sample to test blood sugar levels. Prior to meals, blood sugar levels range from 70 to 130 mg/dL. After meals the range should be less than 180 mg/dL.

    Fasting Blood Glucose

    • Normal fasting blood glucose levels range from 70 to 99 mg/dL. When fasting, individuals are required not to consume food at least eight hours prior to testing.

    Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

    • An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is performed two hours after drinking a 75 gram glucose drink. The normal levels after an OGTT test is performed are 140 mg/dL or less.

    Gestational Diabetes Screening

    • Gestational diabetes screening is performed during week 26 to 28 of pregnancy. After drinking a 50 gram glucose drink, a blood test is performed one hour after consumption with normal levels being less than 140 mg/dL.

    Gestational Diabetes Diagnostic: OGTT

    • At fasting, normal level should be less than 95 mg/dL. After the fasting blood draw, a 100 gram glucose drink is consumed and blood is drawn four additional times. Ranges for one hour are less than 180 mg/dL, two hours is less than 155 mg/dL and under 140 mg/dL after three hours.
