High Blood Sugar vs. Low Blood Sugar
Low and high blood sugar levels can cause serious health problems. Each condition can be a symptom of diabetes; however, there are significant differences between the two illnesses.-
Low Blood Sugar (Hypoglycemia)
-
Hypoglycemia is caused by low levels of blood sugar in the body; the condition affects diabetics and nondiabetics. Fast foods, starches and simple sugars are staples in the modern diet and they have increased the prevalence of hypoglycemia.
High Blood Sugar (Hyperglycemia)
-
Hyperglycemia is caused by high levels of glucose in the blood; the condition affects diabetics. Blood sugar elevates when the body ceases to produce insulin (type 1 diabetes), or if the body does not respond to insulin production (type 2 diabetes).
Hypoglycemia Symptoms
-
Hypoglycemia lowers blood flow to the brain and can impair its functioning greatly. People suffering from hypoglycemia may become confused, have vision problems, experience anxiety, irregular behavior and increased hunger levels.
Hyperglycemia Symptoms
-
Hyperglycemic people experience frequent urination which also increases thirst. Weight loss, fatigue, darkened skin and blurred vision are symptoms of hyperglycemia.
Hypoglycemia Treatment
-
Medications that raise blood sugar levels are used to treat the condition; additionally, diets that are rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, complex carbs, protein and fiber help raise blood sugar. However, diabetics must avoid raising blood sugar levels too high.
Hyperglycemia Treatment
-
Hyperglycemia is treated through healthy diets, increased physical activity, weight loss, diabetes medication, stress reduction and daily blood sugar monitoring.
