Diabetes & Menopause
The combination of diabetes and menopause may feel like a one-two punch. Common menopausal symptoms such as sleep problems, fatigue, forgetfulness and moodiness may be mistaken for low blood sugar.-
Blood Sugar Level
-
Maintaining good blood glucose control can be challenging for diabetics. During menopause, hormonal changes can cause fluctuations in your blood sugar level, making it even more challenging to stay in control.
Sleep Problems
-
Menopause can cause sleep problems because of hot flashes and night sweats. Sleep deprivation can cause fluctuation in your blood sugar levels.
Weight Gain
-
If you can control your weight, you can probably keep your diabetes under control, but that's not always as easy as it sounds. Menopause may trigger weight gain, leading to an increased need for insulin or medication.
Sexual Problems
-
Falling hormone levels can lead to decreased arousal and discomfort during intercourse. Diabetes can lead to the same symptoms.
Prevention/Solution
-
It is more important than ever during menopause that you closely monitor your blood sugar. If you maintain tight control over your diabetes, it will be easier for you to recognize when hormones are affecting your symptoms. If you find you are no longer able to achieve good glucose control, your doctor may recommend hormone replacement therapy.
