How to Live with an Ileostomy

Life changes in significant ways for those who have an ileostomy operation. This operation, which typically is performed to remedy intestinal problems, changes the way waste is removed from the body. An abdominal pouch is surgically placed in the stomach to collect waste. The patient must learn to empty the pouch and to take proper care of it. Aside from the physical changes associated with an ileostomy there are emotional changes as well. Patients might feel angry, ashamed or depressed. These emotions can be dealt with as patients learn to live with their ileostomy pouch.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn to empty and care for your ileostomy pouches prior to leaving the hospital. Have medical staff review the process with you as many times as necessary. Enlist a family member to learn the procedures as well for times when you might be ill or otherwise incapacitated.

    • 2

Arrange for how you will obtain your ileostomy supplies. You could arrange for mail order or live near a drug store from which you can purchase the supplies. Order in advance, so you always have supplies on hand and do not run out at a critical time.

    • 3

Schedule a follow-up visit with your physician prior to leaving the hospital for any additional guidance.

    • 4

Take a spare pouch and all needed changing supplies with you when you go out. Even if you are leaving for only a short time it is best to be prepared.

    • 5

Resume your normal work and physical activities when your physician believes you are ready. This generally occurs six to eight weeks following your operation. Keep extra ileostomy supplies at your work or in your automobile for convenience.

Join a support group to share your feelings and experiences with others. Participate in an online forum if you cannot find a group in your area.
