Time Frame

Preparations for a colonoscopy may begin between one and three days before the tests is performed, according to the NDDIC and Medline Plus.
Diet

No solids should be eaten once preparation for a colonoscopy has begun. According to the NDDIC and Medline Plus, acceptable liquids include: bouillon or broth with no fat, strained juice, water, plain coffee and tea, sports drinks and gelatin.
Laxative or Enema

Laxatives and enemas should only be used as directed by a doctor in order to clear the bowel before a colonoscopy, according to the NDDIC.
Medications

Patients taking preparations with iron will be asked to stop taking these several weeks before the test, and medications that thin the blood should not be taken for several days beforehand, according to Medline Plus.
