Medication for Abdominal Spasms & Pain With Food Poisoning

Food poisoning occurs as the result of eating food items contaminated with some type of virus, bacteria or parasite. Food poisoning severity varies according to the type and amount of the contaminate. Also, food poisoning complications are more likely to occur in young children, elderly people or people who are already ill. Over-the-counter medications and prescription medications can help alleviate abdominal spasms and pain while recovering from food poisoning.
  1. Effects

    • Symptoms of food poisoning typically include fever, fatigue, nausea, stomach pain and cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

    Time Frame

    • Symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within a few hours of eating a contaminated food item. Symptoms may last just a day or they may persist for as long as 10 days in some cases.

    Over-the-Counter Medications

    • Anti-diarrheal medications such as Imodium and upset stomach medications such as Pepto Bismol may help relieve spasms and pain. Also, Tylenol can alleviate pain. Avoid ibuprofen because it may make the pain worse.

    Warning

    • See a doctor if you are vomiting frequently for more than 2 days, if you are vomiting blood, if diarrhea persists for more than 3 days, if blood is present in stools or if you are unable to keep down any liquids for more than 24 hours.
