Pain Medication for Lapband Surgery

The Lap Band procedure is minimally invasive surgical procedure that involves the placement of a band around the top portion of the stomach to reduce appetite. The procedure is done laparscopically, using several tiny incisions.
  1. Prescription Medications

    • According to University of California Medical Center, prescription-strength liquid Tylenol is used to control pain after the Lap Band surgery. Severe pain may be controlled with liquid narcotics such as Lortabs.

    Over-the-Counter Medications

    • Anti-inflammatory medications such ibuprofen may also control Lap Band pain. These medications may be used in place of prescription medications or after prescriptions have run out.

    Time Frame

    • Pain medication is usually only needed for a few days or a week at most following the Lap Band procedure.

    Other Pain

    • Sometimes the shoulder may ache after surgeries such as the Lap Band procedure. Anti-inflammatory medications and the use of heating pad may help alleviate this pain.

    Warning

    • If pain persists for more than a week, consult your physician. Prolonged pain may indicate some type of surgical complication.
