Over the Counter Medications for Extreme Gas

Passing gas by belching or farting is a natural byproduct of the way our body digests food. Dealing with extreme gas, however, can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, but over-the-counter remedies may provide relief.
  1. Simethicone

    • Simethicone is commonly used anti-flatulent that neutralizes stomach acid and allows gas bubbles to pass easily out of the body.

    Activated charcoal

    • Although largely unproven, the chemical trapping and absorption properties of activated charcoal are thought to be able to provide relief from gas.

    Probiotics

    • Probiotics, also known as "good bacteria," exist naturally in fermented foods like yogurt and are available in supplemental pill form as well. These bacteria work to regulate potentially gas-inducing bacteria in the colon.

    Beano

    • Alpha galactosidase, the active enzyme in Beano, helps break down and digest the complex sugars found in beans and vegetables. Beano isn't effective against preventing gas that is caused by lactose or fiber.

    Lactase enzymes

    • If your gas is caused by a lactose intolerance, taking lactase enzymes will provide your body with enough of the enzyme necessary to break down and digest sugar lactose.
