Home Remedies to Reduce Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, is caused by overproduction of acid the stomach uses to digest food. When there is too much acid in the stomach, it will overflow, or reflux, into the upper stomach and esophagus. Acid reflux can be very painful, and it is sometimes confused with a heart attack. Most home remedies for acid reflux can be found in your cupboard or refrigerator. Concentrate on incorporating foods into your diet that are easily digestible and don't irritate your stomach.
  1. Fruits and Vegetables

    • Because citrus acid can compound acid reflux symptoms, oranges and grapefruits should be avoided until your stomach recovers. But apples and bananas are safe to eat and may even alleviate some burning symptoms. Green vegetables such as green beans, broccoli and peas will bring down stomach acid. Carrots are also a good choice for those suffering from acid reflux.

    Meat, Dairy and Grain

    • Only lean meat is advisable during an acid reflux episode. Animal fats take longer to digest and require more stomach acid for that purpose. If meat comes with fat, trim it, or drain the grease after cooking. Skinless chicken is good for acid reflux, as chicken fat often clings to the underside of the skin. Fish is always a good low-fat choice. Fat-free or low-fat dairy products such as milk and cheese are safe to eat and drink. Multi-grain bread, bran, oatmeal and rice are easily incorporated into breakfast, lunch or dinner.

    Water and Natural Remedies

    • As with most other physical maladies, drink plenty of water. Water helps disperse some of the excess stomach acid that languishes in your belly. Apple cider vinegar and pickle juice are good for a stomach suffering from acid reflux. Ginger root, fennel and chamomile are some common herbs used as natural remedies for acid reflux. Barley grass and wheat grass will also decrease acidity in the stomach, but please confer with a health professional before trying natural herbs to prevent allergic reactions.
