Causes & Risk Factors of Sour Stomach
Sour stomach is the sensation of abdominal discomfort commonly known as indigestion. Although it's usually caused by food sensitivity or lifestyle, frequent indigestion may be the result of an underlying condition.-
Symptoms
-
Common symptoms include uncomfortable fullness or bloating, belching, gas, nausea, abdominal pain and a burning sensation in the upper abdomen.
Dietary and Lifestyle Causes
-
Indigestion can be caused by overeating, spicy foods, fatty foods, carbonated beverages and excessive caffeine, alcohol and chocolate. Other causes include smoking, emotional trauma, stress and pregnancy. You may need to see a doctor if your symptoms persist for two or more weeks.
Indigestion as a Symptom
-
Some conditions of which indigestion may be a symptom include ulcers, stomach infections, irritable bowel syndrome and stomach cancer.
Treatment/Medication
-
If abstaining from trigger foods doesn't relieve indigestion, over-the-counter antacids may help by neutralizing stomach acid. Your doctor may also recommend H-2-receptor antagonists (H2RAs), proton pump inhibitors, antibiotics or antidepressants as needed.
Lifestyle and Alternative Remedies
-
Losing extra weight and keeping it off by exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet will significantly reduce recurrences of indigestion. Drinking three to four cups of peppermint or ginger tea per day can help alleviate discomfort and promote better gastrointestinal health.
