Colon Test Preparation

For the two most common types of colon testing, you'll need to prepare beforehand. A sigmoidoscopy doesn't require too many days of preparation, but the procedure isn't performed as often as the better-known colonoscopy. Some planning can make the process a little more bearable.
  1. Planning

    • Begin planning a few weeks before your colonoscopy. Schedule the procedure so you can take the day off. It's also wise to take the day before off, too. Enlist the help of someone you trust to drive you to and from the hospital. It's also worth asking if your hospital offers advanced check-in to reduce waiting time on the day of the procedure.

    Prescription

    • Your doctor may give you a prescription for a laxative called Miralax that you'll take the night before your colonoscopy. Start checking pharmacies well in advance of testing because not all of them carry Miralax powder and the plastic jug you'll need to mix it in.

    Supplies

    • Stock up on supplies a few days in advance. Choose a variety of clear liquids that are free of any red or purple dyes, including broth, lemon or lime jello, apple or white grape juice and Gatorade. Invest in the softest toilet paper you can find and some flushable wet wipes that don't contain perfume or alcohol. A jar of petroleum jelly (or hemorrhoid cream) isn't a bad idea, either. Buy a book, magazines or crossword puzzles to get you through those long sessions you'll spend in the bathroom.

    Medications

    • Your doctor will give you specific instructions for medications, but in general, stop taking any iron supplements about a week in advance of the procedure. You may be instructed to stop taking aspirin, pain relievers and blood thinners too.

    The Day Before

    • The day before your procedure, you'll be instructed to drink clear liquids. Don't aim for much activity. Just relax and stay home. Remember that it will all be over soon, and the colonoscopy itself only takes minutes. You'll be under a mild sedative the whole time. Most people don't feel or remember a thing.

    The Evening Before

    • In the evening, you'll start taking the laxative chosen by your doctor. Unless otherwise instructed, mix the flavored powder with water in the plastic jug that came with your prescription. Sip this throughout the evening. Try to finish it, but if you gag or feel nauseated, wait an hour before continuing. About a half an hour after you start drinking, you'll need to go to the bathroom. Once you've finished---this could take several hours---get a good night's sleep. You'll probably be pretty exhausted.

    The Day of the Procedure

    • On the day of the procedure, you won't be allowed to eat or drink anything, including water. Most doctors schedule colonoscopies in the morning, so you shouldn't have to wait too long. Try to relax. You've already finished your preparation. That's the hardest part of colon testing.

    Doctor Instructions

    • Always follow your doctor's advice, especially if you're given additional specific instructions for your test.
