How to Flush Toxins from the Body

In today's world, even the most health-conscious person is exposed to environmental pollution. Toxins are everywhere, and many of us unknowingly put toxins in our body when we eat, drink and breathe. Thankfully, we have also an extremely sophisticated cleaning mechanism powered by the liver and digestive system. We can also flush out toxins via our skin, the largest elimination organ in our body. Our lungs are also very useful to expel toxins.

Get a colonic cleanse. A colonic cleanse is a great way to flush out built-up toxins from your digestive tract. This is especially true if you have a history of constipation, gas, and bloating. During this process, a colonic therapist will insert a disposable speculum and hose connected to a colon hydrotherapy unit to pump water through the rectum and into your colon. Ask your doctor if colonic irrigation is right for you.

Perform deep breathing exercises. Deep breathing helps the lungs flush toxins from the body. Breathing exercises also serve to transport oxygen via the lungs over to all the cells in the body to promote cell detoxification. Deep breathing exercises are simple. First, sit up straight and exhale completely through your mouth. Second, place your hands on your stomach and breathe in slowly through your nose. If you are doing it correctly, your hands will be pushed out at every inhale and pushed inwards with each exhale. Repeat this breathing exercise 10 times preferably first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed.

Break a sweat. Sweating is a great way to flush out toxins through the skin. Try running or hot yoga for good exercise options that promote copious sweating. Saunas and steam rooms are also good to promote detoxification via the skin. Make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and always consult with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine.

Maintain liver health. Eating liver-nourishing foods can be considered the ultimate toxin-flushing diet, since the liver is essential to internal cleaning. Common liver-supporting foods that should be eaten on a weekly basis are apples, garlic, onions, turnips, artichokes, rhubarb and sprouts. Parsley, lemon juice and apple cider vinegar are also extremely beneficial. To make the most of your toxin flushing efforts, limit the consumption of products that damage the liver such as excessive alcohol, fried foods, refined sugar, and soft drinks.

Maintain colon health. The colon is one of the body's inherent cleansing mechanisms. By promoting colon health with the foods you eat, you will help your body flush out toxins and waste more effectively. It will also help prevent toxins from being re-absorbed into the bloodstream. Excellent sources of fiber to promote colon health include beans, lentils, turnip greens, collard greens, mustard greens, broccoli and Swiss chard. Flax seed, raspberries, strawberries and fennel are also beneficial.
