Instant Remedy for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a common disorder, especially in people over 50. The muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, called the lower-esophageal sphincter, weakens with age, contributing to symptoms of acid reflux. Being overweight, smoking and eating an unhealthy diet can all contribute to symptoms of acid reflux. Though long-term lifestyle changes will help the disorder, immediate relief can come from simple changes, common over-the-counter medications and herbal remedies.
  1. Lifestyle Changes

    • The first thing to consider when relieving acid reflux is simply changing your clothing or body position. This will often provide immediate relief. Loosen any tight clothing. Clothing that cinches the waist pushes on the abdomen and the lower esophagus, according to the Mayo Clinic. Changing your position may relieve symptoms, too. If you have lain down after a meal, elevate your head or get up and walk around a bit to relieve symptoms. The Mayo Clinic suggests waiting at least two hours after a meal before lying down.

    Over-the-Counter Medications

    • For immediate relief of acid reflux, you can take over-the-counter medications. There are three types of over-the-counter medications: antacids, H2 receptor blockers and proton pump inhibitors. Antacids may give immediate relief. Antacids contain calcium, which neutralizes stomach acid, but they should not be used all the time. They will give immediate relief but will not heal the esophagus. Prolonged use may cause constipation or diarrhea.

    Herbal Remedies

    • Several herbs may help relieve acid reflux. Three of these may provide immediate relief: licorice, slippery elm and marshmallow. All three of these herbs are mucilages. This means that they will coat and soothe the esophagus and gastrointestinal tract. Licorice may also provide long-term benefits. A low level of prostaglandin E occurs in people with acid reflux. Licorice helps raise PGE levels while soothing the esophagus. Marshmallow will not treat acid reflux but will provide relief from the sore throat that sometimes accompanies acid reflux. Slippery elm will provide immediate relief, and its anti-oxidant properties can help heal the GI tract. If you choose to take licorice, take 250 to 500 mg three times per day. You can take marshmallow in a root maceration or infusion. Take 5 ounces per day. Take 800 to 1,000 mg of slippery elm capsules three times per day.
