Remedies for Excessive Belching

It is normal to belch several times a day. In fact, the Mayo Clinic asserts that it is healthy to expel internal gas at least 12 times in a single day. If you find that you're belching much more often than that, going well over 20 times a day, then you likely have digestive problems. Rather than dealing with the embarrassment of excessive belching, you can help the condition by modifying your lifestyle.
  1. Changes in Eating Habits

    • Excessive gas is largely due to the food you eat on a regular basis. If you don't have a well-balanced diet, you may be causing your own burping problem. Next time you're at the grocery store, steer clear of foods that are high in fat, especially fried foods. Dairy products such as milk and cheese have been known to cause excessive burping as well. Try limiting your intake of these foods and choose similar nondairy products instead.

If you've improved your diet and you still have excessive belching, start a food diary. Write down everything you eat each day and list your excessive belching for that day. You may find a trend in which you burp more after eating broccoli than other foods. Carbonated drinks could even be a culprit. Eliminate the food causing your problem to see an improvement in belching.

Your food choices aren't the only things that cause excessive digestive gases. Sometimes it's a matter of how you are eating rather than what's on your plate. Large meals can cause gas, so try eating smaller, more frequent meals instead. Eat slowly to avoid filling up your stomach too quickly.

    Other Methods

    • Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve symptoms from most conditions, and excessive belching is no exception. Exercise on a regular basis. Mild workouts work well, such as a walk around the neighborhood or a short bike ride. This will help relieve your belching.

Belching is often caused by swallowing an excessive amount of air. Smoking cigarettes can contribute to this. Consider quitting smoking to not only improve your health overall, but to reduce your excessive belching.

Swallowing too much air can also happen when you have poorly fitted dentures. Visit your dentist to see if you can have a better fit. Over-the-counter medications such as Beano and Lactaid also help relieve excessive belching.
