GERD Reflux Disease & Pain
-
Significance
-
Acid reflux can not only irritate the esophagus and its lining, but can also cause a great deal of damage. Ulcers, narrowing of the esophagus and precancerous tumors can result.
Symptoms
-
Painful symptoms of GERD include a burning sensation in the chest and throat, a painful cough, chest pain, the feeling of a lump in the throat and difficult and painful swallowing.
Heartburn
-
Many people who suffer from GERD experience heartburn pain. The pain frequently follows a large meal and can occur when you are lifting, bending or lying down.
Stomach Distress
-
Stomach pain, nausea and an uncomfortable feeling of fullness are other symptoms of GERD. Wet burping, which includes stomach acids, is also common and painful.
Hiccups
-
Persistent hiccups are not funny at all to GERD patients. They may bring up stomach acids that burn the throat and esophagus and cause pain.
Treatment
-
Mild GERD symptoms and pain can be treated with lifestyle changes, over-the counter medications, and antacids. Avoid big meals, wear loose pants and avoid trigger foods. Sometimes perscription strength medicine or, in severe cases, surgery is required.
