Medicine for Indigestion
Indigestion, while not generally a serious health issue, can be uncomfortable, causing heartburn, belching, bloating, nausea and a full feeling. It may be caused by certain foods (spicy or fatty) or beverages (caffeine or alcohol), by overeating or by eating too quickly, according to Medline Plus.-
Antacids
-
Antacids, such as Rolaids, Tums or Maalox may be enough to relieve your symptoms. They neutralize the acid in your stomach with ingredients such as calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate or magnesium hydroxide.
H-2 Blockers
-
H-2 blockers are histamine-2 blockers that reduce the production of acid in your stomach. They include over-the-counter medications such as Prilosec OTC and Zantac.
Prescriptions
-
If your indigestion is persistent or it is caused by an underlying condition, such as a stomach ulcer or gastroesophageal reflux, you may need a prescription-strength medication such as Nexium or Prevacid to reduce the acid in your stomach.
Natural Remedies
-
According to Farmers Almanac, you may relieve your indigestion with natural remedies such as a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water or fresh pineapple or papaya. You may also want to try drinking a cup of peppermint or chamomile tea or chewing on anise seeds.
Prevention
-
To prevent indigestion, eat small meals and chew slowly to allow your stomach to feel full. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and fried, fatty or spicy foods and do not have a beverage with your meal. Drinking with your meal dilutes your stomach juices, which inhibits the digestion process.
