Ring Worm Scalp Symptoms & Treatments

Ringworm, an aggressive fungal infection, remains a common disorder, particularly among children. Although it can affect various body parts, such as skin and nails, it's mostly known for its placement on the scalp.

Identification

• Easily identifiable symptoms of ringworm on the scalp may include large patches of dry skin, brittle hair or overall pain in the region.

Prevention/Solution

• Medicated shampoo can be used to help stop the spread of infection. Oral medications may be prescribed as well and often times are more effective than shampoos or creams.

Warning

• In cases of extreme ringworm, the condition known as kerion may occur. In this instance, the fungus becomes so aggressive it can lead to severe inflammation and pus-filled sores on the scalp, not to mention hair loss.

• As soon as prescribed treatment is started, an immediate improvement can be seen on the scalp. However, it's important to finish any medication or shampoo as directed as ringworm can come back.
