IBS may cause stomach cramping, stomach pain, bloating, excess gas, constiption and diarrhea. Also, mucus may be visible in the stool.
Significance

According to the Mayo Clinic, about one out of every five adults has symptoms associated with IBS.
Identification

IBS is diagnosed based on a physical exam and medical history. Doctors may diagnose IBS after ruling out other conditions. Other conditions may be ruled out using the following diagnostic tests: colonoscopy, CT scan, flexible sgimoidoscopy, lactose intolerance tests and blood tests.
Time Frame

IBS can only be diagnosed once symptoms have been reported for a period of about 12 weeks. IBS is a chronic condition that will require long-term management.
Treatment

Mild IBS may be treated by eliminating gassy food and by taking fiber supplements and over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications. More serious cases of IBS may require treatment with antidepressant medications and IBS medications such as Lotronex and Amitiza.
