Signs & Symptoms of Colon Problems or Disease

The colon (large intestine) is responsible for the elimination of waste products and the absorption of water and minerals in the body. Various diseases and medical conditions can affect colon function. Some of the health problems that harm the colon can be diagnosed earlier than others because their symptoms are more noticeable.
  1. Colon Cancer

    • Colon cancer is a disease that is often caused by the formation of polyps, or growths of precancerous cells, in the colon. This form of cancer causes symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, fatigue, weight loss and/or bloody stools.

    Ulcerative Colitis

    • Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the colon and rectum. Symptoms of the disease include anemia, weight loss, rectal bleeding, abdominal cramps, dehydration, malnutrition, bloody diarrhea, skin lesions, growth stunts and/or joint pain.

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome

    • Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic disorder that affects the small intestine. It causes symptoms such as abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, flatulence and/or mucus in the stools.

    Diverticulitis

    • Diverticulitis is a medical condition that can cause abnormal pouches to form in the colon. Symptoms of the disease include pain in the left side of the abdomen, abdominal tenderness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, bloating and/or rectal bleeding.

    Fistulas

    • A fistula is an irregular passageway that can develop between the colon and other bodily structures, such as the small bowel or bladder. It causes abdominal pain and/or swelling.
