The Best Food for Diarrhea
-
BRAT Diet
-
The best anit-diarrhea foods are bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. This is often known as the BRAT diet. These four foods are easy on the stomach, so they don't cause further irritation to your digestive system. Some of them are also considered binding, which means they can cause constipation. But if you have diarrhea, they can help solidify your stools. These can be eaten by anyone over age of 12 months. Infants younger than 12 months require medical advice from a pediatrician.
Yogurt
-
When you have diarrhea, your body is trying to rid itself of bad bacteria. Yogurt can help because it contains beneficial bacteria that help keep your digestive system running smoothly. Yogurt is also very easy on your stomach and will not cause problems associated with certain dairy products made from milk. In fact, avoid milk and milk products if you have diarrhea -- milk could make it worse.
Liquids Including Jello
-
Diarrhea often causes dehydration. Your body is losing fluids more rapidly than usual, so consume extra liquids -- water, fruit juices, Jello, and even broth from soup. Stay away from prune juice or any other type of juice that promotes bowel movements. Also, avoid caffeine, which can irritate your digestive system.
Children can eat popsicles or Pedialyte popsicles made just for kids who have diarrhea.
