Fructose Malabsorption Treatment
Fructose is a simple sugar, similar to glucose, present in many foods we eat. A healthy person's intestines can absorb a certain amount of fructose, usually up to 50 gm. per meal. Fructose malabsorption describes the condition in which the intestines are unable to absorb fructose. This can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as diarrhea and gaseous bloating.-

There is no medical treatment that directly affects fructose malabsorption. Your doctor may prescribe anti-diarrhea medication to alleviate some symptoms, but this is only a short-term fix. The best remedy is a diet that avoids fructose altogether.

Fructose is a non-essential nutrient. We don't need it to survive, and we therefore can safely eliminate it from our diets. If you suffer from fructose malabsorption, this is your best bet at relieving your symptoms. Check the ingredients of all packaged foods; if you see fructose or sorbitol on the list, put it back on the shelf. The worst culprit is high-fructose corn syrup, which is found in scores of juices, sodas, and snacks. This ingredient should be avoided. Some other high-fructose offenders include honey and fresh fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, fruits and vegetables are a crucial part of a balanced diet, but they will exacerbate your symptoms. Talk to your doctor about supplements or other ways of achieving the nutrients found in fruits and vegetables such as iron, calcium, and vitamin A.
