Salmonella Infection Symptoms

Salmonella is a bacterial infection that affects the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Salmonella is primarily caused by ingesting contaminated water or eating undercooked or raw eggs, egg products, poultry or meat.
  1. Primary Symptoms

    • Salmonella symptoms typically include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and abdominal pain. Some individuals also notice blood in their stools.

    Other Symptoms

    • Salmonella sufferers often feel flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches and headaches.

    Typhoid Fever

    • Typhoid fever is caused by a specific salmonella bacteria. Symptoms include high fever, confusion, slow heartbeat, coughing and an eruption of rose-colored spots on the chest.

    Duration

    • Salmonella symptoms typically last from four days to one week. Infected individuals generally start feeling ill within 12 to 72 hours of being contaminated.

    Treatment

    • Most salmonella sufferers recover without any medical treatment. Doctors occasionally prescribe antibiotics if they believe the salmonella bacteria has entered the bloodstream.
