Throat Problems & Acid Reflux

Acid reflux disease causes a backup of stomach acid into the esophagus, or gullet. This acid can cause many irritations, including sore throats.
  1. Acid Reflux

    • Acid reflux is created by stomach acid being regurgitated into the esophagus. The medical name for acid reflux is gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.

    Throat Problems

    • Some of the throat problems caused by acid reflux are sore throat, weakened voice, hoarseness, problems with swallowing and a feeling that the throat is coated in a mucuslike substance.

    Symptoms

    • According to the University of Michigan Health System, GERD symptoms include, sore throat, shortness of breath, excessive phlegm in the throat, coughing and postnasal drip.

    Acid Reflux Treatment

    • Acid reflux can be treated with antacids, such as Tums and Rolaids. Recurring reflux may need to be treated with prescription medications.

    Sore Throat Treatment

    • Treatment for throat problems caused by acid reflux should include pain treatment and the treatment of the acid reflux. Throat pain is usually treated with over-the-counter analgesics, such as ibuprofen. Cough syrups and expectorants may help with coughing and excess mucus.
