Natural Herbs for Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a condition that happens when acid from the stomach is pushed into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest area and nausea. If left untreated, ulcers may eventually form in the esophagus. Though there are pharmaceutical medicines that can be prescribed or purchased over the counter, many individuals have opted for more natural remedies. Fortunately, several herbs can assist in preventing and relieving acid reflux while promoting healthy digestion.

    • Ginger has several beneficial uses and can treat a plethora of digestive issues. Since ginger activates functions in the digestive system, it helps to absorb the acids and the stomach and and calm your system. Ginger can be taken either in the capsule form or as an herbal tea. If you prefer the capsule form, take a 500 mg ginger pill daily, preferably before eating a large meal. If you prefer tea, grate a teaspoon of ginger root into a cup of boiling water. Stir the mixture and let it cool for a few minutes. Sip slowly for best results.

    Slippery Elm

    • For centuries slippery elm has been used as a natural herbal remedy for a variety of ailments including colds, cough, indigestion problems, burns and wounds. Native to North America, slippery elm is a tree that contains mucilege, a substance resembling gel that can be used for reducing and aiding symptoms common in acid reflux. It works by coating the esophagus and reducing painful inflammation. Combine two tablespoons of slippery elm bark with two cups of boiling water. Let the mixture boil for five minutes. After cooling, drink one cup per day. Alternately, you may 800 to 1,000 milligrams of slippery elm in the capsule form three times per day.

    Licorice

    • Licorice, also known as deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL, can be beneficial because it coats the esophagus and protects it from the painful stomach acid that rises into the esophagus in association with acid reflux. Licorice can be taken in several ways, including DGL tablets, fluid extract, or in the powder root form. For the capsule form, take 1,000 milligrams three times daily. If you prefer licorice root powder, consume one to four grams daily mixed in one cup of water. For fluid extract, consume up to four milliliters per day.
