Amitiza is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation. It is intended for adult use. The medicine is intended to treat constipation of unknown cause that is not directly linked to any digestive condition. It is often used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). As with any type of medicine, there are possible side effects.-
Most Common Side Effects

There are a few common side effects that are very often associated with Amitiza, including headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea. These side effects are usually not considered to be cause for alarm, as they tend to subside once the body adapts to the medicine. However, if the side effects worsen or linger, medical assistance might be required.
Other Common Side Effects

Other common and usually minor side effects of Amitiza are stomachache; gas and bloating; cold sweats; nervousness and anxiety; swelling of the feet, ankles and hands; coughing; sore throat; dizziness; muscle or joint pain; vomiting; and appetite loss.
Allergic Reactions

Possibly severe allergic reactions can result from Amitiza use. If you experience an allergic reaction, you must seek emergency medical attention. Some signs of possible allergic reaction to Amitiza are the swelling of the throat, tongue, lips, mouth and face; problems breathing; and breaking out in hives.
Immediate Side Effects

Some people might notice that, within an hour or so of taking the medication, they experience shortness of breath and chest tightness. These side effects tend to fade within approximately three hours or so, but are often recurring. It is important to notify your physician if you have these side effects.
Overdose

If you suspect that you might have taken too much Amitiza, immediately get medical help. Some symptoms of Amitiza overdose include stomachache, hot flashes, dizziness, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, fainting, pale skin and difficulty breathing.
