Natural Constipation Cures
Constipation is one of the most common complaints received by health care practitioners. Around four million American adults report that they are constipated most of the time. Though there are several different types of over-the-counter laxatives, many people prefer a more natural cure for constipation.-
About Constipation

Bowel habits can vary widely from person to person, but on average, a bowel movement occurs once daily. Some people have several per day while others only have one bowel movement every few days. Constipation is generally said to occur when a person has not had a bowel movement for more than three days. Constipation can be caused by a diet lacking in fiber, lack of exercise and movement, or by medications that cause the intestines to slow down. Untreated constipation can contribute to hemorrhoid development from straining, and can eventually lead to impaction and bowel obstruction, which can be medically dangerous. Constipation is more common in the elderly, in women and is a frequent complaint during pregnancy. Whether constipation is short term (acute) or long term (chronic), there are many options for natural constipation cures.

Epsom salts are a naturally occurring magnesium sulfate salts. They have been in use for hundreds of years for a variety of health conditions, and are very helpful at producing a bowel movement in a severe case of constipation. One tablespoon of Epsom salts dissolved in a glass of water can be expected to work within several hours. Epsom salts should only be used occasionally for constipation as it can cause fluid imbalances if used over a long term.
Mineral oil is an effective lubricant that can help the fecal matter slide out of the intestines more easily. A few tablespoons of mineral oil can be taken for constipation. Mineral oil should not be used on a regular basis because it can cause vitamin loss if used over a long term.
Molasses or dark brown corn syrup mixed with warm water is a remedy commonly given to infants. A few tablespoons mixed in a cup of warm water can be very effective at relieving constipation because the natural sugars in the solution promote bowel movement.

Eating more high-fiber foods such as beans and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage will increase the fiber in the diet. Switching to whole grain breads and pastas will also increase dietary fiber. Most Americans do not get enough fiber in their diet, and simply increasing fiber consumption will often lead to relief of constipation. When increasing dietary fiber, be sure that plenty of water is consumed as well. The added bulk of the fiber needs water to increase the stool mass to promote bowel movement.
Fennel seed, psyllium husks or flaxseed can be purchased from a health food store and soaked in water for a natural fiber laxative. This method can be used on a regular basis for chronic constipation.
Getting regular exercise will also promote regular bowel movements. Exercise will provide tissue oxygenation along with muscle development needed for proper bowel habits. When starting an exercise routine, always check with your doctor first.
