Side Effects of a B12 Injection

A B12 injection, which is also referred to as cyanocobalamin, is commonly administered to patients who suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency. It helps relive the symptoms of this conditon, which include anemia, chronic fatigue and premature aging. Some side effects are associated with a vitamin B12 injection.
  1. Cardiovascular Effects

    • The patient may experience palpitations, a rapid heart rate or a feeling of tightness in their chest after receiving the injection.

    Muscular Effects

    • After a B12 injection is administered, the patient may suffer from muscle cramps, muscle weakness and muscular pain.

    Gastrological Effects

    • Following the administration of the B12 injection, the patient may experience mild diarrhea, nausea and upset stomach.

    Respiratory Effects

    • One of the most serious side effects on these injections is not caused by the vitamin itself, but rather by a compound called benzyl alcohol, which is used as a preservative. It causes coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

    Swelling

    • Vitamin B12 injections can cause swelling in the body's extremities, including the hands, feet and ankles. Tingling or numbness may also be experienced.
