Chronic Constipation in Adults

Many adults experience an occasional bout of constipation, which generally doesn't signal a digestive problem. However, chronic constipation can stem from conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome or poor diet. Constipation refers to infrequent bowel movements; sufferers may have fewer than three stools a week. This leads to a host of other uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal bloating, gas and stomach pains. You can take steps to correct the problem.
  1. Fiber Capsules

    • Adults need between 20 and 35 grams of fiber a day. Eating less than the recommended amount can prompt constipation and other digestive health symptoms. Take a fiber supplement to receive your daily supply and increase your intake of fiber-foods such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, pasta, nuts and whole-grains.

    Regular Exercise

    • Lack of physical activity is another common cause of constipation in adults. Plan to spend at least 30 minutes a day engaging in some type of physical activity: Ride a bike, go for a walk, jog or visit the gym.

    Adequate Fluids

    • If you drink insufficient fluids, you are more likely to experience hard stools and constipation. Drinking water, juices and decaffeinated teas increases fluid secretion in the intestinal tract. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day; and avoid caffeine and alcohol.

    Laxatives

    • Use laxatives as a last resort. These medications are available over-the-counter, and they generally soften stools and relieve constipation within 12 to 24 hours. However, laxatives are habit-forming, and overuse can interfere with your body's normal rhythm. Read the package label and take medication as instructed.

    When to Seek Medical Attention

    • Chronic constipation that doesn't respond to home remedies within three weeks requires medical attention. Although most bouts of constipation are harmless and don't indicate a serious problem, constipation can point to a serious underlying condition such as colon cancer and ovarian cancer.
