How to Deal With Diarrhea Naturally

If you have mild diarrhea, there are some natural cures that can help you at home. If, however, your diarrhea is chronic or severe, going on for longer than a few days or causing dehydration or pain, you should see a doctor. If the person with diarrhea is a child, ask his or her pediatrician before trying any home remedies. Severe diarrhea can indicate a life-threatening problem.

Rest. Drink plenty of fluids to make up for the fluid loss caused by diarrhea. Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and cola, which are diuretics and cause you to lose water.

Eat plain yogurt with active probiotic cultures, or take a good-quality probiotic supplement. For more suggestions of how to get active cultures into your diet to increase your colon health, see the Resources section.

Mix a heaping tablespoon of carob powder well in a glass of cool water. Don't use milk, as milk can make diarrhea worse for some people. Drink it. You may see your stool firm up (and darken because of the dark brown color of the carob powder) within a few hours or up to a day later. This is a home remedy I swear by. Be careful of taking too much, or carob can actually make you constipated.
